Apart from being the largest Tiger Reserve forest in the country, Sundarban is also a 'Biosphere Reserve Jungle'. In 1973, the Sundarban National Park has declared a tiger reserve and in 1977 a wildlife sanctuary was made. In 1984 it was given the status of National Park.
In 1987, the Sundarban forest was included in the World Heritage Site and two years later in 1989, it was declared a Biosphere Reserve. The Sundarban, made up of a group of 54 small islands in West Bengal, is also synonymous with the terror of man-eating tigers.
